The concept of Kendo is to discipline the human spirit through the principles of the Katana (Japanese sword). Kendo literally means “The Way of the Sword”, and is one of Japan’s oldest martial arts, closely associated with the Samurai. While Kendo is now a popular modern sport, the historic warrior principles are still very much in evidence. It is suitable for both men and women, who compete and train together.
The ANU Kendo Club is affiliated with the Australian Kendo Renmei and the International Kendo Federation. Club members compete at local and interstate competitions throughout the year. The ANU Kendo Club accommodates all experience levels and is currently the only Kendo club in the ACT. Spectators, visiting kendoka and new members are welcome.
If you haven't practiced Kendo before, we highly recommend starting with the beginner course. This course will equip you with essential knowledge about Kendo, covering basic principles and techniques, the care and use of equipment such as shinai (bamboo sword) and bogu (protective gear), and dojo etiquette. It’s an excellent starting point for your Kendo journey.
