In what was an exciting and successful year for the ANU Australian Football Club (ANUAFC), all three teams (Men’s 4th Grade, Men’s 3rd Grade and the Women’s team) secured their spot in the AFL Canberra 2019 Finals series.
The Men’s 4th Grade team finished the home and away season in 3rd place. The Men’s 3rd Grade team finished in 2nd place. The Women’s team claimed minor premiers for the season, securing them a top-of-the table clash for their first final!
Both the Men’s 3rd Grade team and the Women’s team earned their spots in a Grand Final with convincing wins over ADFA and Molonglo respectively. The Men’s 4th Grade team played exceptionally well, however, were unfortunately defeated by Woden in their semi-final, just missing out on a Grand Final berth.
In an exciting weekend, both the 3rd Grade Men’s and the Women’s teams played in the Grand Final on August 31st. Unfortunately, the Men’s team went down to ADFA by just 16 points in what was an evenly matched and thrilling contest. As for the women, for the first time in their 18-year history, the ANUAFC Women’s team won their Grand Final, coming away as premiers and proud owners of a sparkling trophy.
The Women’s team won the 2019 AFL Canberra Grand Final against the 4th placed Bateman’s Bay Seahawks with a confident 36-point win that showcased incredible marks, skilful play, awesome goals, and fantastic teamwork.
ANU Sport once again congratulates the ANUAFC for their amazing work and looks forward to their success across all three grades in the 2020 season. We encourage anybody interested to come down to ANUAFC’s trainings to give it a go and be a part of an amazing club!
