Half Blues Award
Nickolas Harris (Rowing)
Nickolas competed in most ACT regattas for the club in 2011, won the men’s eights race in the 2011 Disher Cup, and won a silver medal in the men’s coxed fours at the 2011 Australian University Championships.
Tom Brazier (Hockey)
Tom has represented ANU in the ACT Competition’s highest grade for the past 4 seasons and was a player and team manager for the 2011 Eastern University Games men’s team who won Gold and went through the competition undefeated.
Dylan Conolan (Rowing)
Dylan represented ANU at all local regattas in 2011, was the ANU Boat Club regatta point score champion for 2011/12, was selected and competed in, the ACT Youth Eight at the 2011 King’s Cup Regatta, and also won bronze in the 2011 Australian University Championships in the open lightweight men’s quad scull.
Liam Gooding (Rowing)
Liam competed in most of the local regattas for the club, and won a silver medal in the men’s coxed four at the 2011 Australian University Championships.
Mathias Maier (Rowing)
Mathias competed in most ACT regattas for the club, won the men’s eight race in the 2011 Disher Cup, and won a silver medal in the men’s coxed four at the 2011 Australian University Championships.
Natasha Russell (Fencing)
Natasha came in the top 3 at all monthly foil events she attended in 2011 which led to her being named the 2011 ACT Open Women’s Foil Champion. She also won a bronze medal in Women’s Epee at the 2011 Australian University Games.
Peter McCullagh Achievement Award
The “Peter McCullagh Achievement Award recognises achievement by an individual in ANU Sporting Clubs across administrative achievement, outstanding contribution to clubs, or sporting excellence (non-student).”
Rob Solomon (Hockey)
Rob is one of the longest standing club members having joined the Hockey Club in the early 1980s. Along with having played over 600 competition games, captained and organised many teams, he was also awarded life membership of the club in 2009. Rob has held the positions of vice-president, treasurer, assistant treasurer, social coordinator, and competition secretary.
Alex Minovich (Sailing)
Alex has been a valued club member for the past 5 years, 4 of these on the committee. He has served as Captain of Boats in 2010 and 2011. He has been pivotal in growing the sailing club membership over those two years due to his diligence looking after the fleet, as well as his commitment to the club and the sport. Alex was also a member of the ANU Sailing team that won the Australian University Sailing Association Fleet racing Championship in 2011.
Jennifer Muir (Jujutsu)
After joining as a beginner in 2002, Jennifer was elected treasurer from 2003-2006, becoming secretary in 2007-08, she then became Vice president and treasuer in 2009 and 2010 and was popularly elected as President in 2011. Personally Jennifer was promoted to first dan black belt in 2005 and also accredited through the Australian Jujutsu Federation as an Australian Coaching Council Level 2 coach. Jennifer was the second female in the Canberra region to be awarded 4th dan black belt during the clubs 35 year history.
Justin Bewsher (Fencing)
Justin has been an active member of the ANU Fencing Club since 2007. He was secretary in 2007-08, and President from 2009 – 12. In his role as President, Justin has been responsible for the smooth running of all of the ANU fencing competitions throughout the years. Despite battling a knee injury, Justin has continued to defend his title as ACT Champion Men’s’ Foilist and Epeeist (held since 2009) for the 2011 season, as well as ranking in the top 40 for both weapons at a National Level (33rd for Epee and 22nd for Foil).
Melissa Holland (Jujutsu)
Melissa commenced Jujutsu in 1995 as part of the ANU Club. Over the past 17 years she has contributed in administration, promotion and record keeping. In 2002, Melissa was a brown belt and achieved accreditation through the Australian Jujutsu Federation as an Australian Coaching Council Level 1 coach and in 2007 she was upgraded to Level 2. Melissa is the first female in the Canberra region to be awarded 4th dan black belt during the club’s 35 year history.
Ray Vran (Scuba)
Ray has been a core member of the scuba club for 38 years, he has been a core and regular trip organizer for the club and spent countless hours repairing and refitting club boats and gear. He always Fosters safe diving practices by mentoring new divers. Rays contribution has assisted in placing the club in a sound position for today and into the future.
Club of the Year Award (2011 & 2012)
ANU Boat Club
In 2011 the Boat club increased its membership by 5%, retained qualified coaches from novice to elite level, ran a highly successful “introduction to rowing” program for first time rowers, improved and maintained the amenity of the boatshed and surrounds, increased its annual financial turnover, met all audit requirements and had members appointed to various committees locally and nationally. In 2012 the club continued to build on its success in 2011 and increased membership by a whopping 28%, again ran a highly successful “Introduction to Rowing” course, retained their high quality coaches for all squads, competed successfully at the Australian, NSW and ACT Championship regattas, the rowing ACT winter time trials, and the Head of the Yarra. The club also became the number 1 rankedmen’s rowing team, the number 3 ranked women’s rowing team, and the number 2 overall at the Australian University Games. On top of this the club also completed purchase or refurbishment of 17 boats, increased its annual financial turnover, met all audit requirements, and continued to have several members appointed to committees which are important to the functioning of rowing locally and nationally.
